Goals and Strategies

Mission: To work collaboratively to build capacity for improving literacy skills among adults and improving both literacy skills and academic achievement among children and young people.

To support economic development by sustaining and expanding literacy opportunities that enable a skilled labor force to contribute to a growing economy.

  • Involve local, state and regional economic development drivers in supporting literacy strategies.
  • Engage local employers in workplace literacy and postsecondary education/training

To promote workforce development by increasing connections among literacy program participants to living wage jobs and/or career advancement in the labor force.

  • Engage employers, schools, community colleges, and others in field-specific literacy activities (i.e., health, financial, etc.).
  • Connect literacy efforts with existing workforce development programs.

To enhance the quality of educational opportunities by sustaining and expanding opportunities for raising literacy levels, improving academic achievement, and increasing the number of people continuing education or training.

  • Promote improvements in the quality of adult basic education, ESOL, and literacy programs.
  • Connect literacy programs with schools and alternative education programs to create “safety nets” for young people leaving school.
  • Improve the accessibility and quality of ESOL courses.

To strengthen families by increasing access to high quality family literacy services.

  • Strengthen family/ intergenerational literacy programs. (Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium)
  • Encourage parent-child interaction and learning (Reach Out & Read/Boston Medical Center)

To build informed active communities at all levels by integrating literacy opportunities as a part of all aspects of community life.

  • Improve the ability of adults to read and become civically engaged (Boston Herald literacy campaign, community newspapers, etc.).
  • Promote literacy efforts in communities (Massachusetts Literacy Leaders Awards).
  • Sponsor local fund raising/awareness activities (dinners, golf tournaments, etc.).
