Program

Diploma Plus small high schools incorporate a supportive school culture, a performance-based approach, future focus, and effective supports in order to increase opportunities for students so that they graduate college- and career-ready.

The Diploma Plus model is a blueprint for developing small stand-alone schools serving approximately 250 students. DP provides a rigorous alternative for over-aged and under-credited students.

Diploma Plus is a process-model for developing small stand alone schools, The support provided by the Regional and National Networks during implementation also serves as scaffolding for a variety of reform models.

All DP Networks have adopted the philosophy that failure is not an option for our young people. They come to our schools in search of something different and special. Our schools deliver on that promise and prepare them for success in their post secondary experience and eventual career choice.

Diploma Plus Schools exist in Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and California.

Need

In many urban centers, less than one-half of the students graduate. These numbers are even higher for poor students, those of color, and whose first language is not English. Low numbers of youth placed at-risk enter and complete college or are prepared for the workforce. Some youth underperform because there is an inadequate supply of alternatives to traditional high school.

Solution

With DP, graduation is determined by proficiency, not by seat time. Curriculum is engaging, student centered, and designed around key competencies. Teachers model for students how to apply learning strategies during college-related coursework and internships. A portfolio system captures and demonstrates student mastery.

Impact

Diploma Plus students are more engaged and challenged by their schoolwork and report they are better prepared for college and careers.  They are overwhelmingly positive about their experience in the program, appreciating the personalized, caring environment it fosters.  About 80% of graduates plan to enter post-secondary education.
