Berkshire Arts and Technology Charter Public School (BArT), Adams, Massachusetts

The Berkshire Arts & Technology Charter Public School (BArT) opened its doors in September 2004 as a member of the Diploma Plus network. BArT integrates the study of arts and technology with core subjects to promote mastery of academic skills, content, and competencies in order to prepare students for college and develop into independent thinkers, dynamic workers and active citizens for life. The school provides middle and high school students in Northern Berkshire County (in Western Massachusetts) with an intellectual community that regards everyone, including teachers and parents, as perpetual learners.

For more information, see www.bartcharter.org.

Boston Adult Technical Academy, Boston, Massachusetts

The Boston Adult Technical Academy (BATA), located at Madison Park High School, was established in the fall of 1999 as an afternoon and evening program for young adults in Boston (aged 18-22) wanting to earn a high school diploma.  Aside from serving an older high school population, BATA is unique because many of its students are newcomers to the United States and are English language learners.

Champion Charter School, Brockton, Massachusetts

The Champion Charter Public School (CCPS) was the first brand-new school based on the Diploma Plus model. It was founded in 1998 by the Brockton Public Schools in partnership with MY TURN, a community-based organization in Brockton, MA offering school-to-career and college transition programs. CCPS operates as a "Horace Mann" Charter School, meaning that it operates under a state-granted charter within the local school district. All of CCPS's approximately 125 students are considered youth placed at risk and many are returning to school after dropping out of school.

Diploma Plus - Lawrence Adult Learning Center, Lawrence, Massachusetts

Lawrence Diploma Plus is a small two-year alternative program for students who are not meeting with success in the district's high school. The program, which opened in September 2003, is located within the district's Adult Learning Center. The program targets students who have had poor attendance and/or are behind in grade for their age. It currently serves 25-30 juniors and seniors from Lawrence High School. Students begin in the Presentation level and are promoted to the Plus Phase after completing specific course work and a portfolio aligned to the competencies and district standards. Students graduating from the program are awarded a Lawrence High School diploma. It is hoped that the DP program will expand to serve more students and offer a three-year sequence of instruction once a new high school building opens in the district. With this expansion, the program will likely target more English language learners.

Early College High School, Springfield Public Schools and Holyoke Community College, Holyoke, Massachusetts

The Early College High School (ECHS) Diploma Plus program in Holyoke, Massachusetts, is a collaboration of CYDE, the Springfield Public Schools (SPS) and Holyoke Community College (HCC). An outgrowth of an earlier one-year program, called “Another Route to College,” ECHS was awarded National Foundation of Science funds through the state Department of Education in 2004-05, enabling it to increase its student enrollment to 50 and expand into its current two-year Early College High School format, built on the Diploma Plus model, at HCC. ECHS target population is students who have not yet passed one or both sections of the state’s MCAS high school exit exam. Accordingly, in addition to a strong focus on the transition to postsecondary education, ECHS has emphasized academic remediation and test preparation.
