Success Stories
The BEST For Older Youth projects have a unique project design that integrates the education component of training with specific occupational skills training in a given industry. It is thought that this type of design provides the greatest opportunies for success by coordinating services to the participant.
Within BEST Older Youth, a number of projects are focusing on youth who have not received a high school diploma or GED. For example:
In the Greater Lowell area, youth were recruited and were excited by the offer to combine their progress toward a GED within the industries of either Banking/Finance or Health/Human Services. Youth who previously had not been motivated to attend classes and take their exam, have begun to succeed. The Lowell project, aptly named The Opportunity Project, has 9 GED's to date. Ten additional youth have passed 3 or 4 of the five required tests. The program has done a great job in supporting the youth to achieve success.
One student in the Bristol project enrolled in the Health Care component of their program. This young woman needed her GED and had not had success studying for the exam in the past. Once within the program, her instructors helped her progress so she was confident and ready to take the tests. Not only did she pass, she tested within the top 10th percentile in the nation and was subsequently offered a scholarship at Bristol Community College. Congratulations for this tremendous effort by both the student and the program staff!
